This is a shout out to my Dad. He has every excuse in the world to be a lightly involved Father. He is an orthopedic surgeon. He could work 24 hours a day.
But he doesn’t. Thanks! It makes a difference in my world. And now it is making a difference with my kids.
He sure worked hard. Damn hard in fact. I didn’t realize until later in life that he was normally up and at the hospital doing his rounds by 6:00AM – 6:30AM so he could be home by 4:00PM and be involved in my life and my two sisters. When he was on call, he would be at the hospital all night dealing with some emergency. I don’t remember this. He hid it well.
Well guess what? It’s is my turn now.
I just spent the last two weeks waking up at crazy hours of the morning to help keep a project at work on track. Why would I do this? I had a great mentor. I forced myself to wake up at 4 and 5 AM before I had to “officially” get into work so I could see my kids in the morning for breakfast and get home to play with the kids before they dropped off to bed. Technology, when used right, can be a great tool to catch a few extra moments with the kids and avoid being physically at the office.
My Dad is an inspiration to me. He is humble in words and powerful in action.
