Silver Dollar

What’s the value of a silver dollar?

Well, apparently, that question has many answers.

To me: whatever the market will pay.

To my two year old son: absolutely worthless.  He just walks right over one on the floor.

To my near four year old son: a bunch of fun shoving it in and out of this clothes and throwing it around the room and begging to keep it to put it in the back of his toy trucks.

To my near six year old daughter: a long line of value based questioning…..here is how it went.

Ellie:  Dad, is this silver dollar worth the same as this penny? (holding the two pieces of coin next to each other right in my face)

Me:  No the silver dollar is worth a dollar and the penny is worth a cent. (not wanting to go into the fact that some people are collectors)

Ellie:  So, this silver dollar is worth 100 cents?

Me:  Wow, Ellie that is very cool you understand that 100 cents makes up a dollar.

Ellie:  Yeah, I know this stuff.  Can we go buy a princess dress with the silver dollar?

Me: No, a silver dollar won’t buy a princess dress.

Ellie: If I take your pile of silver dollars can I buy a princess dress?

I have to hand it to the girl.  She is very savvy!

BTW – Since I am not a coin collector, I figured I better understand what the market would pay for a handful of 1972 silver dollars. Apparently, about the same as an everyday dollar bill.
