My wife threw a party for her previous Pregnancy to Parenthood students. She teaches Lamaze childbirth preparation classes in addition to her writing endeavors.
Kimmelin has taught over one hundred couple in the course of three years so we weren’t sure if our house could contain the crowd if a huge number of students took her up on her open party invitation.
As luck would have it, we had just the right number of people show up for a potluck dinner. With 8 couples arriving with one or two kids in tow, our house wasn’t completely packed and everyone had a good time getting to know each other (all the couples ended up being from different class series over the years).
One thing was evident – the dads were absolutely engaged and excited about talking about their new babies. I talked with a dad with a brand new four month old all the way to a dad telling me about his two year old. It is fascinating to hear dads talk about kids when they aren’t worried about who and what is around them. I saw dads feeding the kids, changing diapers and generally being just as engaged as the moms.
Times are a changing…
